Potato starch extraction process
The potato starch extraction process is a physical separation process which means that the starch in the potato raw material is separated from impurities of starch slurry thorough a series of processing procedure. And the production process is divided into weighing and conveying, cleaning, washing, grinding, separation,sand removal, protein separation, dehydrating, drying and packaging.
The following is the detail step for potato starch extraction process
1. Potato pretreatment stage
a. Frsh potato weighing and conveying: This is the first step for potato starch extraction process. The potatoes are weighed on the weighbridge and stored in the potato yard. Then the raw materials are transported by conveyor to the potato cleaning and washing machine where the stones, sand and other attached objects are separated.
b. Cleaning and washing: In potato starch extraction process, potatoes are fed through the feed hopper and transported into cleaning machine for removing the small stones, dirt and other debris of raw materials. After stone removal, potatoes are washed in a rotary washing machine. The potatoes are constantly rolling and rubbing in the water, which can make the soil on the potato peel off to achieve a good washing effect. After washing, potatoes are transported to the temporary storage hopper through the inclined belt conveyor.
2.Starch extraction stage
a. Potato grinding: This is the most important procedure in potato starch extraction process of potato starch production plant. For it determines the extraction rate of starch and starch yield. The role of grinding is to destroy the structure of the potato roots, so that tiny starch granules can be disintegrated and separated from the potato roots.
b. Starch slurry separation: The grated potato slurry need to be further processed to remove the impurities from starch in potato starch extraction process. Centrifuge sieve is used to separating fiber and potato starch. Multiple screening or countercurrent washing processes are generally adopted. It is required that after the separating and washing process, and the starch content of the residue should less than 35%.
c. Sand removal: After separating, there still exists sand in the potato starch. If the sediment concentration of the slurry is high, it will not only influence the taste of the starch but also affected the sales and price of starch. So the desanding process is a necessary potato starch extraction process. The desander can remove sediment in the starch, improve the make the product quality to a higher class.
d. Protein separation: In this process, we designed a 14-stage concentrated hydrocyclone station for potato starch extraction process. And the process water is pumped from the other end of the cyclone station to wash the starch in a countercurrent manner. The multi-stage washing can ensure the washing effect of the cyclone station, better remove the impurities such as fiber and protein contained in the starch milk.
3. Starch dehydrating and drying stage
a. Dehydrating: The water content of starch milk coming out of hydrocyclone station is too large to dry directly. Therefore, it is necessary to dehydrate starch milk first in potato starch extraction process. Vacuum filter is the mainly used dewatering machine which utilize the negative press to dehydrate the potato starch. The DOING dewatering machine can reduce the moisture content of wet starch lower than 38% after dehydration.
b. Drying and packing: The wet starch is then conveyed into air flow flash dryer for frying. The steam pressure is controlled at 0.8 MPa. The potato starch extraction process requires that the moisture content of the finished starch is about 13.5% after drying. Packing and warehousing requires a sufficient number of bags, and timely packing for storage.
